Most people cannot imagine living in a vulnerable world of pure darkness. For some this is a way of life. Dogs for the Blind is an amazing organization, they provide brilliantly trained canines to assist people without sight through their everyday life. From getting around the house to navigating downtown and negotiating traffic, people must have the up-most trust in their guide dog.
The amazing relationship that sight impaired people have with their guide dog allows them to enjoy many things that they may have to pass up without them. Often the dogs are depended on to not only be an aid, but a guardian. They are trained to watch for a wide variety of obstacles, from cars to curbs. This brings an element of safety that may not be attainable without assistance. Confidence can be instilled and along with it a sense of freedom is gained.
Only from a rock solid foundation can all of these things become a reality. While the primary function of these special animals might be to act as a guide, they are often much more. Companionship is a side-effect that is hard to avoid. On top of being highly trained and reliable, they are immeasurably loving, compassionate, and loyal.
